Autoimmune Disease

ARE you suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis, or Multiple Sclerosis, or Psoriasis, or Type 1 Diabetes? Then the chances are that you are suffering from a condition called Autoimmune Disorder.

What is an Autoimmune Disorder/Disease

Autoimmune disorder/disease is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy cells, tissues, or organs. This can lead to inflammation, fatigue, joint pain, and other mild to severe symptoms.

There are over 80 known autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases/disorders can affect nearly any organ and system in the body. However, some organs are more commonly affected than others. Commonly targeted organs include joints, skin, thyroid gland, digestive system, and nervous system. Other organs that can be affected include the eyes, heart, and blood vessels.

 Symptoms

Different Autoimmune diseases/disorders may have similar early symptoms. These can include:

With some Autoimmune diseases/disorders, including Psoriasis or Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), symptoms may come and go. A period flare-up and remission.

Individual Autoimmune disorder/disease can also have their unique symptoms depending on the body systems affected. For eg, In Type1 diabetes, you may experience extreme thirst and weight loss, and  Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may cause bloating and diarrhea.

Causes

Till date the exact cause of Autoimmune disorder/disease is not fully understood

Psychosomatic causes

What Does “Psychosomatic” term means ?

“Psycho” = Mind

“Somatic” = Body
So, psychosomatic term means physical conditions influenced by mental or emotional states.

·       Being too self-critical

·       Non-acceptance of self

·       Angry with self

·       Rejecting oneself for believing one is not good enough

·  Stress –though it is most common, but is the least understood cause. Unmanageable stress leads to helplessness; each triggers the other while keeping the patient in a perpetual loop of self-doubt and non-acceptance.

Diagnosis and Findings

Autoimmune diseases are Diagnosed through a combination of Medical History, Physical Examination, and Lab Tests and referrals. Since autoimmune conditions can mimic other illnesses, diagnosis can be tricky and often takes time.

It is important to note that

  • No single test confirms all autoimmune diseases.
  • Diagnosis is clinical + investigative — combining symptoms, duration of problem, and test results.
  • Early detection is crucial to prevent long-term damage.

Cure

Generally speaking, Autoimmune disorders/diseases cannot be cured through modern medicine or the Allopathic system of treatment, though they can be effectively managed through a combination of therapies and treatments.

The available treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and suppressing the overactive immune system. Medications, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants, are commonly used to reduce inflammation, pain, and suppress the immune response.

Side Effects

Dependence – The Patient becomes dependent on the medicines.

Drug resistance – Eventually, the medicine will have little or no effect. Patients often become resistant to the effects of the drug when they are on a long-term prescription. When this happens, many patients end up being prescribed stronger medicines in addition. This often results in a physical dependence on more than one prescribed drug.

The original problem is never resolved – The condition is only being symptomatically treated, rather than the cause of the problem being resolved.

Increased sensitivity to pain – Evidence suggests that opiates only have pharmacological benefits for a period of three months. Beyond that, they have very little effect. As a result, the patient's pain may well worsen

Development of anxiety and depression – The effects of prescription drugs on the brain when used for prolonged periods can damage the brain's pleasure/reward system. This results in the patient becoming depressed and anxious as there is an imbalance in the brain's chemistry, and they are no longer able to feel pleasure through activities they used to enjoy.

Development of other long-term health complaints – Many medicines have side effects that can affect the brain, stomach, liver, and kidneys.

Quality of life suffers – Patients who are no longer responding to medication prescribed will find that other areas of their life begin to suffer as a result. Being in acute physical or mental pain vastly reduces quality of life. It may also start to affect their ability to work, their social life, and their relationships with others

Alternative, holistic, and complementary treatments are not explored. One major side effect is that the Patient may never explore the benefits of holistic and complementary treatments and therapies. Even in chronic conditions, Other holistic and complementary therapies such as acupuncture ,acupressure, Graphotherapy , PLRT and other alternative and lifestyle options can help with long term and sustainable health benefits.
